“Blurring the Background: Black Performance as Political Ontology”

(New York) is inviting you to the “Blurring the Background: Black Performance as Political Ontology” lecture by Thomas F. DeFrantz.
The lecture is open for all interested citizens and it will be in the English language.
Black Performance arrives as an ontological nodule of dance as politics. Of course, as Black Performance emerges in the crucible of capital and disavowed humanity; the dances fomented within the formation of Black life and Black thought are inevitably constituent of political agency and political address. This paper asserts the centrality of Black Performance as, not a political ontology, but the matter and immanence of political ontology itself. The double-bind of black performance as the opening to contemporary global political formations is considered alongside questions of aesthetic value, skill, practice, and expertise.
Thomas F. DeFrantz directs SLIPPAGE: Performance|Culture|Technology, a group that focuses on live-processing interfaces deployed in the interests of theatrical storytelling. DeFrantz assembles artists into formations to explore themes of social possibility in theater performances, symposia, workshops, and publication projects. DeFrantz received the 2017 Outstanding Research in Dance award from the Dance Studies Association, and contributed concept and voice-over for a permanent installation on Black Social Dance at the Smithsonian National Museum of African American History and Culture. DeFrantz thinks alongside other artists continually, in formations at the American Dance Festival, Movement Research, ImPulsTanz, Ponderosa, and the New Waves Dance Institute, as well as at MIT, Stanford, Yale, NYU, Hampshire College, the University of the Arts, Duke, Northwestern University and the University of Nice. DeFrantz composes music, designs soundscapes, writes interface code, dances, creates texts, and wonders how we could gather through art as a register of possibility and expertise. DeFrantz believes in our shared capacity to do better, and to engage our creative spirit for a collective good that is anti-racist, proto-feminist, and queer affirming.

USA-Balkan Exchange: Practice and Discourse Sharing Laboratory“ is implemented with the financial support of Trust for Mutual Understanding (TMU) и National Culture Fund of Bulgaria, in partnership with “Toplocentrala” Regional Centre for Contemporary Arts и ACT Independent Theatre Festival.

ЛОКОМОТИВА – Центар за нови инцијативи во уметноста и културата, во соработка со The Chocolate Factory Theater (Њујорк), New Dramaturgies Platform (Софија), Stanica/Station Service for contemporary dance (Белград), Movement Research Inc. (Њујорк) ве кани на предавањето на Томас Ф. ДеФранц „Замаглена позадина: Црниот перформанс како политичка онтологија“.
Предавањето е отворено за сите заинтересирани граѓани и ќе биде на англиски јазик.
Црниот перформанс (Black Performance) пристигнува како онтолошки растеж на танцот како политика. Се разбира, како што Black Performance се појавува во искушението на капиталот и отфрленото човештво, танците поттикнати во формирањето на Black life и Black thought неизбежно се составен дел на политичкoto делување и политичкото обраќање. Ова предавање ја потврдува централноста на Black Performance не како политичка онтологија, туку материјата и иманентноста на самата политичка онтологија. Двојната врска на “black performance” како отворање на современите глобални политички формации се разгледува заедно со прашањата за естетска вредност, вештина, пракса и експертиза.
Томас Ф. ДеФранц е директор на SLIPPAGE: Performance|Culture|Technology, група која се фокусира на интерфејси за обработка во живо, распоредени во интерес на театарското раскажување приказни. ДеФранц ги составува уметниците во формации за да ги истражи темите на социјалната можност во театарски претстави, симпозиуми, работилници и проекти за објавување. ДеФранц ја доби наградата за извонредно истражување во танцот за 2017 година од Dance Studies Association и придонесе со концепт и глас за постојана инсталација за Black Social Dance во Националниот музеј за афроамериканска историја и култура Смитсонијан. ДеФранц постојано размислува заедно со други уметници, во формации American Dance Festival, Movement Research, ImPulsTanz, Ponderosa, New Waves Dance Institute, како и MIT, Stanford, Yale, NYU, Hampshire College, the University of the Arts, Duke, Northwestern University и University of Nice. ДеФранц компонира музика, дизајнира звучни пејзажи, пишува интерфејс код, танцува, создава текстови и се прашува како би можеле да се собереме преку уметноста како регистар на можности и експертиза. ДеФранц верува во нашиот заеднички капацитет да работиме подобро и да го ангажираме нашиот креативен дух за колективно добро што е антирасистичко, прото-феминистичко и квир афирмирање.

Предавањето се реализира како дел од проектот „Општествено-политичко делување на современиот танц. Размена САД-Балкан: Лабораторија за споделување практики и дискурси“, со поддршка од Trust for Mutual Understanding (TMU) и Министерство за култура на Република Северна Македонија, во соработка со МКЦ Скопје.
