Research program Nomad Dance Institute

Nomad Dance Academy is organizing Nomad Dance Institute starting in Ljubljana 23rd until 29th September 2013, in frame of Performance Situation Room as part of Life Long Burning project.

A research programme called Nomad Dance Institute (founded by Nomad Dance Academy) is an educational platform that is going to open possibilities to support multi-, inter- and trans-disciplinary research projects, connected with the different aspects of the contemporary dance field in a broadest sense of this term (artistic, pedagogical, theoretical, archival, production, managerial etc.). In accordance with a consensus of NDA partners and DMB members, program follows the motto »All is education«.

The programme (in frame of the activity Performance Situation Room as part of the Life Long Burning project) is going to be inaugurated in September 2013 in Ljubljana by the DMB organ of NDA with ten additional artists and experts, proposed by the Institute task  group. Institute participants are going to meet in Ljubljana and in the space of creative exchange and discussion propose ideas, practices or projects that are going to be later supported by NDI for a long-term development.

Nomad Dance Institute

Each of NDI members is going to have an opportunity to invite »an idea of the recognized other« (a member of the Institute) to be worked through, nurtured and developed through the several years period with a thought of its potentiality, possibility and promise. The one who invites an idea is going to have an opportunity to provide an argument on: why an invited idea might be interested and pregnant, how one sees it to be developed, how could it contribute to the development of the contemporary dance field in the region and how one anticipate its development.

Member(s) who will invite an idea are going to help to co-organize production conditions and circumstances as well as take care that knowledge developed in the process of creation is going to be articulated and transferred back to the community. Project teams are open structure and can accept Institute members that want to joint to the realization of invited idea, which seams inviting and interesting for them to take part.

The projects are going to be supported in negotiable, consensual and balanced financial shares and with a careful thought about different local cultural and financial conditions funded by NDA, local subsidies and co-production investments.

Meeting in Ljubljana will take place in MSUM – Museum of Contemporary Arts, within triennial U3 from 23rd until 29th September 2013. That means that an event will also function as an artistic public event.  Working hours will be from 9am till 6pm. Mornings will start with a brunch from 9am-11am within which we will also create a program for the day. At 4pm we will have lunch and at 6pm Museum closes its doors. In the evenings everyone is invited to attend performances, discussions, movies and a party within CoFestival.

Members of the institute are invited to propose, initiate a discussion, training or else show and share their artistic  practices and creations. Aim of the meeting is to get to know each other, share our knowledge and possibly already invite projects to be supported by NDI.

Summary

NDI is based on two basic principles:  projects are not selected by the jury but alternatively each member of the Institute has a chance to invite a project proposed within the group of the Institute members. Therefore selection is replaced by an act of invitation, which is also one of the basic principles of NDA.

Second principle is that creators of the project are obliged to articulate knowledge gathered in the process of creation and are ready to share it with interested community. In that way new knowledge is transferred back to the community that supported it while it also enables sustainable and self developing community.

Projects and ideas that are going to be invited need to match 50% funds. Besides 100% (50% NDI fund + 50% matching) the Institute proposes to create another extra 50% by creating the Personal Resources Bank, which means inviting members of NDI to provide materials, space and human capacities for free.

Basic goal of NDI is to support multitude of ideas and projects from the region and abroad. NDI enables flow of ideas and networking of creators and organizations from the region and abroad. NDI through its principles creates new environment for collaboration.

Concept of NDI was developed through different sessions from 2011 until 2013: Working group in Zagreb, DMB meetings in Ptuj, Ljubljana and Skopje.

Institute Task Group has in Skopje 2013 finalized above mentioned proposal. Institute TG in 2013 is: Dragana Alfirević, Tamara Curić, Aleksandra Janeva, Violeta Kachakova, Dejan Srhoj, Biljana Tanurovska and Rok Vevar.
